ALBUM OF THE MONTH
On Reflektor, you’ll hear penumbric grooves, stark strings, Smashing Pumpkins riffs, and beats so reggae you can practically smell the herb in their natty dreads. Every instrument sounds like it’s playing its own song, resulting in fantasia like the way an impromptu jam band might form in a smoky beatnik-gen bar—and yet, every cut comes into its own when guided by frontman Win Butler and his acolytes. The two-disc album averages a six-and-a-half-minute track length, leaving plenty of time for rhythms and melodies to mingle and twine, but Reflektor proves that repetition doesn’t have to mean monotony.
